Argentina vs Italy result: Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria put on a show in dominant 3-0 win at Wembley Stadium
Argentina demonstrated why they will be a contender to win Lionel Messi's first World Cup with five months till the highly anticipated Qatar 2022 tournament begins.
At Wembley Stadium, Messi and Angel Di Maria put on a show as the Albiceleste overwhelmed European champions Italy 3-0
A victory that was far more comprehensive than the final tally indicated.
Argentina were simply a cut above in a match dubbed the "Finalissima" between the reigning South American and European champions
As Messi served up Lautaro Martinez for the opener in the 28th minute and Di Maria chipped Italy's goalkeeper Gigi Donnarumma for the second just before halftime
The match was played in front of a pro-Messi and pro-Argentina crowd at the neutral Wembley Stadium in London.
While the first half was more evenly matched, the second half was all Messi and Di Maria as they continued to produce chance after chance.
Only Italian goalkeeper Donnarumma was able to hold the opportunities at bay
Argentina won the South American tournament in July 2021, allowing Messi to collect his first trophy with the senior men's national team (Copa America).
They won another prize at Wembley — the Finalissima success was accompanied with silverware
But they are still improving under manager Lionel Scaloni, extending their current world-best unbeaten streak to 32 games and counting.
Argentina's last defeat came against Brazil in the 2019 Copa America final.
