Johnny Depp wins defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard
Johnny Depp has won a defamation suit against his ex-wife Amber Heard, whom he sued over allegations of domestic abuse.
Johnny Depp has been awarded USD 15 million in damages by a jury. Amber Heard was also awarded USD 2 million by the jury in her countersuit.
Depp, the 58-year-old "Pirates of the Caribbean" star, sued Heard for $50 million.
He claimed that she defamed him in a newspaper opinion piece when she referred to herself as "a public figure representing domestic abuse."
Heard, a 36-year-old actress, countersued for $100 million, claiming Depp slandered her when his lawyer dismissed her allegations as a "hoax."
Depp has denied hitting Heard or any other woman, claiming that she was the one who made their relationship violent.
Amber Heard's December 2018 opinion piece was at the heart of the legal battle. The Washington Post published the opinion piece.
Amber Heard made a statement against domestic abuse in it.
The name Johnny Depp was not mentioned in the article.
However, Depp's attorney informed the jury that Heard was referring to the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' actor.
Depp and Heard met on the set of "The Rum Diary" in 2011 and married in February 2015. Two years later, their divorce was confirmed.
